Gakasiney Initiative

GAKASINEY INITIATIVE - Accomplished

_Niger. Economic development, Training

Niger is ranked by the United Nations Development Program as one of the three poorest countries in the world. One of the country's major problems is food deficit due to insufficient agricultural production. This problem is currently further exacerbated by the global food crisis, generated by increased demand for agro-fuels, which is reflected in the price of basic commodities. The Gakasiney initiative, launched by a Nigerien, Djibo Haruna, tries to find a course of action to fight the food deficit in Niger in a small village called Boubon.

Evolutio International supported the Gakasiney initiative for a year through a) initial accompanying training and follow-up, carried out by agronomists from Swisscontact, b) financing the provision of fertilizers (chemical, organic) for six average growers each having a very large family (25 people on average) c) a plow with oxen which will be co-managed and rented at a very reduced price to people not benefiting from direct support, The number of direct beneficiaries is 130 people (six families).

Through this initial support, the farmers will no longer need external support. The course of the initiative was a success. Each family has been able to significantly increase its harvest and its quality of life. On the other hand and with a view to the future, the group has decided to create a strategic reserve for difficult times. For the continuation of the initiative, the group was increased by three people.

The initiative is autonomous at present. Evolutio International nevertheless remains a partner and support for the project leaders.

Number of direct beneficiaries: 190 people (9 families).
